Watching the life of someone you love unravel before your eyes can be a heart-wrenching experience that causes pain, confusion, and fear. Here at Steps Of Hope Iowa, we want you to know that you shouldn’t have to and don’t need to walk through your journey alone. As a community, we are here to be a shoulder to cry on, someone to talk to, and, when possible, lend a helping hand. On this page, you will find the resources that helped me and my family as I dealt with my son’s struggle with Substance Use Disorder.
This is a big deal!
Iowa Naloxone is a life-saving medication that quickly reverses an overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. It can restore normal breathing within two to three minutes of a person whose breathing has slowed, or even stopped, due to opioid overdose. It’s not harmful in any way, yet it will reverse an opioid overdose and enable a person to breathe again.
Even though having it can save lives, many choose not to get it from the shame and stigma of trying to obtain it. I know because I felt it too. We’re excited to announce that we have secured the first Naloxone dispensary in Polk County, and maybe even Iowa, to help remove the shame and stigma that prevents those who need it, to get it.

After having lost a child to drug poisoning, Steps of Hope has been a community of spiritual and emotional support. The annual walk has been an outlet for healing and has allowed me to share my thoughts and feelings without shame as I meet other people who understand what our family is going through.
Steps of Hope Iowa has saved my life. Physically, spiritually, and mentally. After losing my son in February 2022 to fentanyl poisoning, I had settled with the idea that there was no one that could possibly understand my pain. Thanks to Steps of Hope Iowa, I have learned that I am not alone and there are others out there that know what it’s like to lose a child to substance use disorder. Being able to share my story without feeling stigma or shame allows me to have a sense of healing and hope.
