Daniel was more than a statistic
At Steps of Hope Iowa, we want to assure you that you are not alone. We understand that Substance Use Disorder is a serious disease that affects not just the person struggling with it but also their entire family.
Even though each of us has our own unique experiences and paths in life, we also have many things in common. We may feel angry, anxious, sad, in denial, or have a strong urge to control or assist someone who is using substances. We also share the fear of our worst nightmares coming true. These emotions can leave us feeling desperate for support and desperately searching for hope.
We want you to know that we see you, we hear you, and that YOU are not alone!
As a mother who has experienced the heartbreaking loss of my own child due to Substance Use Disorder, I deeply empathize with you. I understand the immense pain, confusion, anxiety, and fear that come with spending sleepless nights, anxiously awaiting that dreaded phone call. It feels as though I witnessed my child’s life slipping away before my eyes, and no matter how desperately I tried, I couldn’t prevent it.
But also know this, my son Daniel is not defined by addiction.

More than a statistic
Daniel was a son, a father, and a friend to many. He was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off of his back or do anything to help his friends in need. He had a crazy sense of humor and he loved big. He is missed and forever loved.
Today, my main goal as a “mom on a mission” is to channel my pain into a purpose: helping others. This is something my son Daniel actually suggested I should do one day. My aim is to provide support and assistance to those who are suffering, without any stigma, judgment, or shame. Although our individual stories may vary, and I may not have all the answers, I want you to find what I found: HOPE. So let’s come together, join hands, support one another, and navigate through these challenges as a united front.
Today, at Steps of Hope Iowa, we offer assistance and support to those who are grappling with the consequences of Substance Use Disorder. We believe that significant changes can be achieved through legislation, education, and raising awareness. My deepest hope is that you find the courage to take that initial step and, as a result, experience a sense of solace and recovery on your personal journey, understanding that you are not alone.
